The company that envisions a robot in every home has begun with a fan favourite from the upcoming Star Wars film

At this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, Lucasfilm surprised the world by revealing that the BB-8 droid from The Force Awakens is not a computer-generated character, but a product of practical effects and robotics engineering. BB-8 rolled out onto the Celebration stage to much applause and bewilderment.

Lucasfilm’s decision to pair up with a company that specializes in small entertainment robots called Sphero to create a miniature version of the new droid is nothing short of a power move in terms of the studio’s merchandising strategy. The Sphero BB-8 can be controlled through a special phone app, which includes additional features like augmented reality and patrol mode.
