The Art of Eating With a Vegetarian

Words by Andrea Ang

My brother walked into my room the other day. I want to be vegetarian, he declared. Did you know? Cow farts are the number one source of carbon emissions in the US.

No one knows things like that, I said, without looking up from the email I was writing.

He left. I didn’t think about it again, until we stood in Megamall a few days after, unable to decide where to grab a snack before dinner. Ooma? No, I was cutting back on rice. How am I supposed to walk into Ooma without ordering a taco maki? I demanded.

His torso swiveled around, feet planted on the ground, eyes searching the area. How about 8cuts? I hadn’t even replied; he was already walking toward it.

My brother and I have almost identical tastebuds. We despise condiments; we move tables when ketchup is placed in front of us. We order the same thing at restaurants; if we can’t, we bicker about who spotted it first. The only difference in our buffet plates is that he will start with a buttload of sushi while I look for peking duck wraps.

I’ll get the Piggy, I said, without looking at the menu. My eyes darted at my brother, daring him to comment on the fact that it had also been my childhood nickname.

I’ll get the fries, he said. He was texting his girlfriend.

Get something else. I’m going to eat those.

He didn’t even look at the menu. And onion rings. His eyes darted to me. I’m not eating meat. Remember?

Since that day, he’s eaten meat loads of times. Sometimes he forgets. Most of the time, he likes the food too much to resist.

We haven’t been back to 8Cuts. But they’ve since started their Daily Steals—value meals of everyone’s most-ordered, across all 8Cuts joints from Mondays to Fridays, 11AM (except for those in Megamall, MOA, and Trinoma, at 10AM) to 5PM. They begin at PhP299+.

They come in the best combos—Steal No. 5, for example, comes with a slider and mozzarella nuggets and children’s party-inspired spaghetti and an iced tea—solving all this or that conundrums. You can have it all.

As for my brother and I, we’re sticking to Steal No.3—the Piggy, and a choice of skinny fries or onion rings. And an iced tea to share.

8Cuts is located at Alabang Town Center, Eastwood, Greenbelt 2, Promenade Greenhills, Rockwell, Salcedo Village, Serendra, SM Megamall, SM MOA, Trinoma, and UP Town Center.
