The child of a German father and Filipino mother, Pia was born in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg on September 24, 1989. Before moving to Cagayan de Oro, where she grew up, she was raised for a brief time in Iligan City.
Prior to Miss Universe, Pia had joined Bb. Pilipinas for three consecutive years (2013-2015). In her first attempt, she garnered first runner-up. By 2014 however, she slumped to the Top 15 ranking.
After winning Bb. Pilipinas this year, Sun.Star released a feature on Pia’s early life and rise to pageantry. In the article, Pia reveals that she had low self-esteem in elementary school because classmates would tease her for her height.
Pia finished her studies at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies in San Juan, Metro Manila.
An article on the Inquirer mentions that at age 11, Pia became the family breadwinner shortly after her parents’ separation.
Pia was entered into ABS-CBN’s theatrical agency, Star Magic at a young age. Her earliest screen credits include appearances on ASAP beginning in 1996.
Another article for the Inquirer reveals that Pia prefers screen roles to pageantry. Pia told the Inquirer: “With pageants, you are yourself. And one of the hardest roles to portray is yourself. When you start asking yourself such questions as am I good enough, will people like me, that’s when insecurities step in.”
From time to time, Pia has also contributed to the 2bU section of Inquirer Lifestyle. Her writing has seen her wear many hats, from stylist to model to writer of reviews on beauty and cosmetics products.
Following Bb. Pilipinas 2014, there was much speculation that the Q&A portion of the pageant had hurt Pia’s chances at landing the top spots; she only managed to make it into the Top 15 ranking. Wurtzbach, having a German father, a mother based in England, and hailing from Cagayan de Oro, was asked by Senator Sonny Angara if he could ask her his question in Tagalog. She agreed and offered to answer in Tagalog as well, which she did, at the cost of being unable to answer within the allotted 30 seconds.
TESDA director-general Joel Villanueva let slip that P-Noy, currently the only bachelor president in Philippine history, and Wurtzbach went out on a group date at a TESDA event earlier in March this year.
